The Connection Between Gut Health, Microbiomes, and Radiant Skin

Yes, skin products are important for healthy, radiant skin. But the more we learn about the body, the more we understand that the key to unlocking your skin’s ultimate glow lies in another body part: your belly!

In fact, researchers are starting to understand the effects of gut health on many other parts and functions of the body, including your liver, immune system, adrenal glands and mental wellbeing, too.

To unpack this more, we discuss the connection between gut health, microbiomes and achieving radiant skin through using high quality beauty products:

What is your microbiome?
We often think of the microbiome as being intrinsically linked to our gut, but a microbiome is any community of microorganisms (such as fungi, bacteria and viruses) that exists in a particular environment. When talking about humans, the microbiome refers to our digest tract and stomach, where good and bad bacteria lives.

How does the microbiome relate to beauty and wellness?

Your gut health can have a direct impact on your skin. When there is an imbalance in the microbiome, skin issues can arise such acne, eczema, skin inflammation, premature aging, and a dull and devitalised skin. Good gut health, on the other hand, can improve your skin quality and give you that glowing, radiant look.

So, how do we improve our gut health as well as our skin?

  1. Drinking plenty of water. Water helps with the breakdown of food enabling better absorption of nutrients in the body. Drinking adequate water can also improve the diversity of bacteria in the gut.
  2. Eat a wide range of plant foods. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, and nuts are rich in fibre and promote growth of beneficial bacteria. Plant foods high in polyphenols such as herbs and spices, colourful fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, green and black tea, coffee and dark chocolate can also help to improve the microbiome in the gut.
  3. Eat fermented foods. Yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, tempeh, and kombucha contain bacteria that can potentially promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.
  4. Avoid processed food. Opt for fresh, wholegrain foods which are as close to their natural form as possible and without additives such as sugar, salt, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and emulsifiers.
  5. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercise can also contribute to a healthy gut. Stress, lack of sleep, smoking and alcohol consumption can all negatively impact the gut microbiome.
